PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SERVICES

DEDICATED TO LEADING EDGE CARDIAC PROGRAMS, PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HEART CENTER PHYSICIANS EMBRACE NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND REPORTING TRANSPARENCY UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF CO-DIRECTORS MITCHELL COHEN, MD, AND JOHN NIGRO, MD.

The Phoenix Children’s Heart Center is one of only six programs in the country to receive a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the highest designation a program can receive. Surgical outcomes data is also available to the public on the Phoenix Children’s Heart Center website at heart.phoenixchildrens.org so that parents have the information they need to choose the best program for their child’s heart care.

Pediatric cardiology services are provided through a joint venture, Arizona Pediatric Cardiology, a physician group that provides clinical services for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart disease in infants and children. Growing programs include:

  • Fetal cardiology
  • Heart failure/transplantation
  • Sudden cardiac death
  • Interstage monitoring/single ventricle and shunt
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Neurodevelopmental cardiology
  • Cardiac effects
  • Aortopathy/Marfan syndrome

You might be surprised to learn that the Phoenix Children’s Heart Center also has a large program for adults living with congenital heart conditions. The program focuses on transitions in care as well as key life stages, such as high risk obstetrics, serving as a medical home for lifelong care of this patient population’s complex heart conditions.

THE VISION MOVING FORWARD

Future enhancements to Heart Center programs include greater use of multi-modality imaging in surgical planning for children with complex anatomy, a robust fetal diagnosis center to identify heart anomalies and disease in the first trimester of pregnancy, and new services employing the science of cardiogenetics and molecular medicine.

“There’s a quote on the wall in the hospital that says ‘Dreams have no expiration date.’ It really resonates with me. Behind every patient are parents who have big dreams for their children, and want them to have a life full of possibilities. It makes us extremely proud to know that our support of Phoenix Children’s helps make those dreams become a reality.”
